If you have recently started paying attention to the coverage scope of medical insurance and hope to make good use of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to reduce the premium burden, then the i-Lindung platform is definitely worth understanding first. Simply put, i-Lindung allows members to directly deduct from their EPF account to purchase life and health insurance, saving cash flow from their own pockets.
i-Lindung is a self-service insurance and Takaful (Islamic insurance) platform launched specifically for members by the Employees Provident Fund (KWSP). Through this platform, members can use their EPF savings to purchase life insurance, critical illness insurance, and the latest basic medical and health insurance (Base MHIT) from EPF-approved insurance companies.
Since the platform was launched, the government has continuously expanded its coverage. All purchased premiums will be directly deducted from the member’s Akaun Sejahtera, with no need to use cash on hand throughout the process.
To buy insurance through the EPF, you must first meet the basic thresholds and conditions set by the EPF. Applicants only need to satisfy the following three core eligibility criteria:
Akaun Sejahtera is the “Well-being Account” renamed from the original Account 2 after the KWSP account restructuring in 2024. Under the latest distribution mechanism, 15% of the member’s monthly EPF contributions will be automatically deposited into Akaun Sejahtera. The funds in this account are specifically used to meet the member’s short- to medium-term living needs, including education, housing down payments, health care, and purchasing insurance through i-Lindung.
The i-Lindung platform brings together products from several major Malaysian insurance and Takaful companies (such as Prudential, FWD Takaful, Etiqa, etc.). With the introduction of the Basic Medical and Health Insurance (Base MHIT) plan, the types of protection available on the platform have become more comprehensive.
| Insurance Category | Main Features & Coverage Scope | Premium Payment Method |
| Basic Medical Card (Base MHIT) | Covers hospitalization and surgical expenses; some plans support cashless admission arrangements, aiming to balance medical burdens. | Deducted once a year from Akaun Sejahtera. |
| Life Insurance (Term Life) | Provides a lump sum payout in the event of the insured’s unfortunate death or Total and Permanent Disability (TPD). | Paid annually, one-year coverage. |
| Critical Illness Insurance | Pays a one-time claims amount upon diagnosis of covered critical illnesses (such as cancer, heart disease, or stroke), to be used as living expenses or treatment reserves. | Paid annually, using a simplified underwriting process. |
The process of purchasing a medical card through i-Lindung is very straightforward, and all steps can be completed on your mobile phone in just a few minutes. Here is the specific operation flow:
Yes, it can. Since the launch of i-Lindung Phase 2 upgrade, members can not only purchase insurance for themselves but also use their EPF savings to insure immediate family members.
Eligible insured family members mainly include your legal spouse and biological children or legally adopted children. However, parents are generally not included in the coverage scope at present (specifics depend on the product terms of individual insurance companies). When purchasing insurance for family members, the premium will also be deducted from the main applicant’s (i.e., the EPF member’s) Akaun Sejahtera.
Although using EPF savings to buy insurance is convenient, it also comes with impacts on future retirement funds. Here is an objective analysis of the advantages and disadvantages:
Is the i-Lindung premium deducted monthly from EPF or in one lump sum?
Most insurance plans on i-Lindung are renewed annually, so the system will deduct the full year’s premium once a year from your Akaun Sejahtera, rather than monthly installments.
What if my Akaun Sejahtera balance is insufficient?
If the balance in your Akaun Sejahtera is not enough to pay the first-year or renewal premium, the system will not be able to process your deduction application. This may cause the policy to fail to take effect or lapse midway. In such cases, you need to wait for the account to accumulate sufficient savings or purchase other plans with cash through an insurance agent.
Is a medical examination required to purchase a medical card through i-Lindung?
No. Products on i-Lindung use a Simplified Underwriting process. During application, you only need to answer a few simple health questions about your medical history. However, please declare honestly to avoid affecting future claims.
If I change my mind after purchase, can the i-Lindung policy be cancelled?
Yes, it can. Like regular insurance on the market, policies purchased through i-Lindung usually have a 15-day free-look period. If cancelled within the cooling-off period, the premium will be fully refunded to your EPF account.
