The public hospitals in Singapore are also known as restructured hospitals that are wholly owned by the government but restructured to run as private companies. Regardless of their ability to afford it, public hospitals run with an aim that everybody can have access.

However, the government-based savings scheme and health insurance plan are eligible for Singaporean citizens and permanent residents only. The expatriates have different charges for the treatment services. The public hospitals are categorized into three regional clusters: 

  • Central region: National Healthcare Group (NHG) and the Alexandra Health System;
  • Eastern region: Singapore Health Services (SingHealth) and the Eastern Health Alliance (EHA);
  • Western region: National University Health System (NUHS) and Jurong Health Services (JurongHealth).

Alexandra Hospital

It is a 326-bedder facility registered under NUHS (National University Health System). It claims to be the first integrated general hospital to provide care across all settings from acute to rehabilitative stage, allowing the patients to be treated in the same setting rather than being transferred to another.

Changi General Hospital

Being a member of SingHealth cluster of healthcare institutions, Changi Hospital is an academic medical institution. It hosts 1000 beds, 130 consultation rooms for specialist outpatient care and minor surgeries.

It is an acute tertiary psychiatric hospital offering psychiatric, rehabilitative and counseling services. Established in 1928, it is now a 2000 bedded hospital that provides integrative, holistic  mental health care services.

Opened in June, 2010, it hosts 795 beds for general and acute care. Being a part of Yishun Health (under the National Healthcare Group) in the north of Singapore, it is designed with green and energy efficient buildings, with wards that have views of greenery and naturally cool air for the patients to have a comfortable and hassle-free experience.

National University Hospital

Opened in June 1985, it was Singapore’s first restructured hospital. Being a tertiary hospital, it is a major referral center with 50 medical, surgical, and dental specialists. It is the only public hospital in Singapore offering a pediatric kidney and liver transplant programme. It is a member of NUHS and attends to more than a million patients each year. 

Singapore General Hospital

It is a member of the SingHealth cluster of healthcare institutions and attends patients referred by family physicians and physicians from public and private sectors as well. It is the largest one in Singapore. In the campus, there exist 5 national specialist centers that are co-located. 1,785 beds are set up in the hospital with a staff strength of close to 10,000.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital

Having strong roots since 177 years, it is under the National Healthcare group. It is an integrated care organization with 70 community partners and 80 community health posts. It operates more than 1700 beds with centers of excellence including the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID), Institute for Geriatrics & Active Aging (IGA), NHG Eye Institute (NHGEI) and TTSH Rehabilitation Center.
