The Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, commonly known as HKL, is currently the largest public hospital under the Ministry of Health of Malaysia. It is considered to be one of the biggest in Asia as well. Strategically located in Jalan Pahang, HKL has 49 different departments and units. These include the administration & finance department, the pharmaceutical department, training and research, 27 clinical departments, and 12 clinical support services.
Generally known as Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) in Bahasa Malay, it is the country’s most renowned heart and cardiac speciality hospital. It used to be a part of the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital until 1st August 1992, when it was corporatised and established as a separate and specialist entity delivering the most advanced cardiovascular and thoracic medicine standards for adults and paediatric heart patients.
Since its establishment, IJN has gained broader recognition as the leading Cardiovascular and Thoracic Health Centre in the Asian region as the rising number of referrals for complicated and demanding cases and visits from foreign cardiologists.
Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM or HCTM, formerly known as Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM), was founded in 1976. It is located in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, east of Kuala Lumpur City. It’s one of the university hospitals in Malaysia administered by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia that provides treatment, education, and health promotion services to the general public.
Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, also known as Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras (HRC), was built under the 9th Malaysia Plan and began operation on 2nd July 2012. It is the first hospital in South East Asia that provides comprehensive Rehabilitation Medicine services.
Presently it has 6 wards and 166 beds, with a future plan to expand further to accommodate 300 beds. The rehabilitation centre is well equipped with a high-tech rehabilitation gymnasium and hydrotherapy pools. It also offers outpatient clinics for numerous speciality services as well as Traditional & Complementary Medicine.
University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) or Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) in Bahasa Malay is located in Pantai Dalam. Same as Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM, it’s a leading government-funded university hospital in the country established by Statute in September 1962 and is part of the University of Malaya.
UMMC serves as the teaching hospital for the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Malaya and is the largest and oldest teaching hospital in Malaysia. The UMMC is also the second-largest hospital in Malaysia after The Kuala Lumpur General Hospital. It has 1,617 beds distributed by 44 wards throughout the medical centre serving the district of Pantai Dalam and Petaling.
